Ed Prep NYC

Ed Prep NYC is an accelerated teacher preparation program exclusively for NYCPS school-based staff. You attend a subsidized master's program in specific subject areas while getting real classroom experience. Throughout the program, you receive support from school leaders, the Ed Prep NYC team, and the cohort, all working together to help each participant build a successful teaching career.

Eligibility

You are a current NYCPS employee and possess a bachelor’s degree or higher in a major other than education with a minimum 2.8 GPA. No prior teaching experience is required.

Your Career

The Ed Prep program provides resume assistance, application support, demo-lesson coaching, and interview preparation to help you successfully navigate the hiring process. A high percentage of Ed Prep NYC participants are hired by the school at which they currently work. 

Application

The Ed Prep NYC Application is open! Here is the application and enrollment schedule: 

  • September: Application opens
  • October: Accepted candidates apply to a CUNY program
  • November: CUNY application deadline
  • January: CUNY classes begin 

Your Training

Participants in the Ed Prep NYC program benefit from:

  • Participation in a professional learning series to assist aspiring teachers in customizing instruction to meet individual needs and learning styles
  • Mentorship from NYC Men Teach
  • Ambassadors to enhance teaching practice
  • Support and guidance from school leadership 

Program Timeline

Step 1

Submit the Ed Prep NYC Application

Share information about your background and experiences on the online Ed Prep NYC Application.

Step 2

Sign the Commitment Letter

If admitted to the program, we’ll email you the commitment letter to sign and accept your spot.

Step 3

Apply to a Teacher Preparation Program

We’ll send your contact information to your university, and they will send you their application to submit.

Step 4

Complete Required Workshops and Testing

Explore certification requirements on the New York State Education Department website. Ed Prep NYC provides free test prep sessions to help you prepare for your certification exams.

Step 5

Earn NYSED Teacher Certification

Following successful completion of the first set of coursework and the mandatory NYSED exams and workshops, you will be supported to apply for a Transitional B Certification. You will be required to earn Transitional B Certification by June 30th. 

Step 6

Complete the NYCPS Teacher Application to Access Open Jobs

Once you complete the NYCPS Certified Teacher Application, you will be added to the New Teacher Finder where you can browse and express interest in open teaching positions across NYC.

Step 7

Prepare for Your Start Date

Once hired, you will get instructions on how to complete several onboarding tasks before your first day. Apply when the application opens and you could be teaching in a NYCPS classroom by September!
