Advanced Certifications and Extensions

If you are a current NYC Ʒ߿ (NYCPS) teacher looking to grow your skills and serve students in high-need areas, the NYC Extended Certification Program can help you earn an additional Students with Disabilities teaching certification or bilingual extension—at no tuition cost to you.

This opportunity is designed to help teachers expand into critical shortage areas like bilingual special education, opening pathways to new roles while deepening instructional practice and better serving school communities.

Apply for Teacher Training Programs

The application for the Spring 2026 cohort is now open!

The application for the Spring 2026 cohort is open from October 8 through December 1. The program will offer:

  • SwD certification for teachers who already have a bilingual extension,
  • Bilingual Extension for teachers who already have an SwD certification, OR
  • Bilingual extension for teachers at a school on the NYCPS approved bilingual list.

Eligibility

You are eligible for this program if you:

  • Hold an active Initial or Professional teaching certificate issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) that is valid through at least December 2026
  • Have completed a degree in education
  • Are currently serving as a lead teacher of record at NYCPS or in a community-based organization (CBO) early childhood classroom
  • Can provide a college transcript for review of prerequisite coursework
  • Commit to working in your new license area at your current school for two years after completing the program

If you are pursuing a bilingual extension, you must also demonstrate fluency and literacy in a language other than English that aligns with the home languages of bilingual students at your school.

You are not eligible for this program if you:

  • Are working as a paraprofessional, substitute, or student teacher.
  • Are currently enrolled in an accelerated certification program, such as NYC Teaching Fellows or NYC Teaching Collaborative
  • Hold only a Transitional B certificate or COVID Emergency certification
  • Already have 6 or more credits toward your target certification or extension
  • Are currently enrolled in college or university coursework
  • Are seeking a bilingual extension based on an English as a New Language (ENL) or World Languages teaching certificate

How To Apply

Step 1

Confirm Principal Support

Discuss this opportunity with your principal and ensure they agree to the classroom requirements. 

Step 2

Submit Online Application

Submit the preliminary application so that NYCPS can assess your basic eligibility.

Step 3

Sign Commitment Form

If you receive a conditional offer, you and your principal will be asked to read and e-sign a commitment form.

Step 4

Apply to a University Partner

You will be invited to apply to our CUNY partner, and that university will determine your final eligibility and invite you to enroll.

Training

You complete a 2-3 semester targeted training program aligned to the subject area of your new certification. Training often includes coursework, in-school practice, and support from instructional coaches or mentors.

Participants commit to teaching at their school under their new license for two years.
