New teachers get robust support to set them up for a successful first year in the classroom.
New teachers hear from guest speakers, learn about key policies, and engage with the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) and their fellow teachers.
New teachers are paired with an experienced mentor at their school during the first year of teaching.
Teachers have access to ongoing learning through workshops, in-service courses, and school-based training. Resources like WeTeachNYC and the Advance system support continuous growth.

Teacher leadership roles offer opportunities to lead beyond your individual classroom. Teachers can be powerful levers of change for school communities and earn additional compensation on top of their teacher salary.
Teacher leaders partner with colleagues and school leaders to identify and strengthen effective instructional and policy practices, as well as build innovative learning initiatives aligned with school goals.
Model Teachers are highly skilled educators who lead adult learning through their lab classroom. By modeling a “lead-learner” stance, they promote critical reflection to improve instruction for diverse students. Their classrooms offer a welcoming space for teachers to reflect, grow, and explore innovative strategies together.
Peer Collaborative Teachers (PCT) support many aspects of school-wide growth. Like Model Teachers, they promote critical reflection to improve instruction for diverse learners. PCTs also mentor peers, lead intervisitation initiatives, and support collaborative teacher teams.
Master Teachers (MaT) are teachers who are driven to impact both school culture and broader systems. Like PCTs, they promote critical reflection and support peers through mentoring, intervisitations, and teacher teams. They also design professional learning and work with school and district leaders to build lasting structures that advance pedagogy.
Current teachers at NYCPS and community-based organizations can pursue additional certifications or extensions with subsidized graduate-level coursework. For the 2025-26 school year, we are partnering with universities to offer Bilingual Extension programs and Students with Disabilities (B-2, 1-6 and 7-12) additional certification programs.
The NYC Men Teach program offers mentoring, professional development, and leadership opportunities that support educators at every stage of their careers.
