How to Apply

If you're on track to be certified, follow the steps below to apply to teach at NYC Ʒ߿ (NYCPS).

Step 1

Obtain an On Track Letter (if applicable)

If you are completing—or recently completed—a New York State-approved teacher preparation program, and will receive your teacher certification by September, you must obtain an On Track Letter completed by your college or university.

Step 2

Gather Your Application Materials

Review the application guide and gather your materials from your school of education. You’ll need to enter your certification details, a reference, preferences for grade level and borough, and upload your resume and On Track Letter.

Step 3

Complete the NYCPS Certified Teacher Application

The application typically takes around 1 hour to complete. It can be done in one sitting or saved and completed later.

Step 4

NYCPS Reviews Your Application

The initial review can take up to four weeks. Once your application is accepted, you can access the New Teacher Finder, an online job search portal where you can search all open positions and be seen by principals and hiring managers.

Step 5

Search for Open Jobs at Schools

Principals and candidates can search for and contact each other in the New Teacher Finder. Candidates are also invited to job search workshops, networking events, and school tours that match their subject area and borough preferences.

Step 6

Apply to Open Roles at Your Preferred School(s)

Reach out to principals at your preferred schools with a short cover letter explaining your interest in the open role. You may be asked to complete an interview and a demo lesson at the school.

Step 7

Prepare for Your Start Date

Once hired, you will get instructions on how to complete several tasks before your first day, like getting fingerprinted.

Get Classroom Experience While You Earn Your Certification

If you're on track to be certified, you may be eligible for opportunities that let you start teaching now—like the Internship Certificate or Student Teaching placements. These options allow you to gain hands-on experience, build your skills, and make an impact while completing your certification.

Internship Certification

If you're enrolled in a New York State-approved, graduate-level teacher preparation program and have completed at least 50% of your coursework, you may be eligible to teach full-time in a paid position while completing your degree.
